The 1997-1998 El Niño: “Old El Niños do die, and they die quickly”

چکیده

In early May of 1998 we saw the sea surface temperature signature of one of the strongest El Niños on record decay within a span of several weeks. At 125W the SST dropped over 5 oC in 17 days. What caused this abrupt end to the 1997-1998 El Niño? It is my goal to attempt to answer this question, at least in part, through the investigation of TAO mooring data including wind velocity, ocean SST, ocean currents, and sub-surface temperatures.

Why were the 2015/2016 and 1997/1998 extreme El Niños different?

Subtle but important differences are identified between the 1997/1998 and 2015/2016 extreme El Niños that reflect fundamental differences in their underlying dynamics. The 1997/1998 event is found to evolve following the eastern Pacific El Niño dynamics that relies on basin-wide thermocline variations, whereas the 2015/2016 event involves additionally the central Pacific (CP) El Niño dynamics t...

Predictive Skill of Statistical and Dynamical Climate Models in SST Forecasts during the 1997–98 El Niño Episode and the 1998 La Niña Onset

In the last decade and a half, our improved ability to forecast El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warm and cold events (El Niño and La Niña, respectively) at longer lead times can be attributed to several factors. Foremost among these are our increasingly improved data observing and analysis/assimilation systems, higher computer speed and storage capacity, and increased understanding of the t...

Altimeter-derived surface circulation in the large-scale NE Pacific Gyres. Part 2: 1997–1998 El Niño anomalies

Changes in the sea surface heights (SSH) and geostrophic transports in the NE Pacific are examined during the 1997–1998 El Niño using altimeter data, sea level pressure (SLP) fields, proxy winds and satellite sea surface temperature (SST). Most of the signal occurs along the boundaries of the basin from Panama to the Alaska Peninsula. Changes in the SSH and alongshore transports along the bound...

Grain refinement, Microstructural characterization, and tensile properties of die-cast AZ91 alloy via Lead and Tin additions

Effects of different amounts of lead (Pb) and tin (Sn) on microstructure and tensile properties of the AZ91 alloy were studied. The results presented that the microstructure of AZ91 alloy is consisted the α-Mg phase and semi-continuous network of β-Mg17Al12 intermetallics. For the as-cast AZ91 alloy, the average grain siz and the β phase volume fraction were 96.2 µm and of 25.3%, respectively. ...

Hydrographic and biological changes in the Taiwan Strait during the 1997–1998 El Niño winter

[1] During the 1997–1998 El Niño event, the average sea surface temperature (SST) in the Taiwan Strait (TWS) in the winter was 1.4 C higher than that of the winter climatological mean. The areal ratio of the warm water ( 2 C above the regional mean) to the cold water ( 2 C below the regional mean) in the TWS increased by 25%while the area of the eutrophic water (chlorophyll a >1 mg m ) was halv...
